President Lt General Seretse Khama Ian Khama resuscitated his mother and former first lady Ruth Khama’s spirit of giving in Oodi on December 27.

In keeping up with festivities, President Khama shared Christmas hampers with Oodi residents at the Kgotla exactly where Lady Khama used to share gifts with children every Christmas season before she passed on.

In a Kgotla packed with cheerful, glowing and expectant faces, the President tirelessly gave each resident a hamper comprising of snacks, sweets and drinks before he proceeded to Mosu village to continue with the gesture.

In an interview, Oodi Kgosi Clatter Rantabe said: “When I was a small boy in primary school, Lady Khama used to come here at the Kgotla every Christmas to share sweets with us but when she died that stopped,” he said.

Kgosi Rantabe said in the past, Lady Khama was doing so in the spirit of neighbourliness because the Khama family has a farm behind Oodi Hill where she used to reside. He appreciated President Khama for remembering his mother’s noble gesture towards Oodi residents and resuscitated it.

Kgosi Rantabe expressed hope that what President Khama reignited would continue as it upholds the spirit of togetherness, saying children will also learn history through the event.
