Gaborone - Michelle Bogoleng is this year's Miss Teen Universe Botswana.

Michelle, 15, was crowned at a Miss Teen Botswana pageant at Mantlwaneng theatre on Saturday.

Not only did she clinch the crown but she also won the best dressed contestant in preliminary judging.

The form four student at Selebi Phikwe Secondary School who hails from Serowe, would represent the country at the Miss Teen Universe billed for Nicaragua, in February next year.

She took over from Nthabiseng Lethebe.

Michelle said she was determined to make a difference among young people during her reign.

"Now that I have the crown, my focus will be on empowerment and inspiration aspects that I have long been dreaming about when I started this competition. I will be empowering the youth and the vulnerable," she said.

Answering a question, prior to winning the crown, which wanted her to explain qualities that the upcoming queen should have, Michelle said she believed that being a queen was not just a title.

"Being a queen comes with responsibilities.

It gives you a great opportunity to be a representative, to be an inspiration to the young girls out there and a chance to stand out and show people the morals and display the good heart that one has," she said.

Kelebogile Rabola and Selwana Motsemeng were crowned first and second princesses respectively.

The three finalists narrowed down from top 10, top five after a total of 18 finalists who competed for the title.

Meanwhile, Miss Teen Universe director, Messiah Jackson said the pageant, founded in 2013, was an annual event tailor-made for girls aged between 15 and 19.

"It creates opportunity for a girl child to be a wonderful Botswana teen ambassador and be a role model to her peers by using the pageant as platform in addressing issues affecting teenagers in Botswana," said Jackson.
