The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, has informed Parliament that the number of people nominated as councillors in different councils is 119.
Mr Tsogwane, however, said he was unable to provide an answer on the number of those who were candidates for the ruling party in the just ended general elections among the nominated councillors as this was not a requirement to qualify for nomination.
The minister would neither state the number of those who were candidates in the BDP primary elections held in February 2013 for the same reasons. He further told MPs that the elected councillors had wards within respective constituencies, while nominated ones were not nominated on constituency basis.
He said the same applied for the nomination of councillors for Sowa Town Council.
Minister Tsogwane explained that nominated councillors were nominated for councils and not for constituencies. Meanwhile, he said there were five nominated councillors for the Francistown City Council (FCC) namely Mr Andy Boatile, Ms Sylvia Muzila, Mr James Kgalajwe, Mr Peter Ngoma and Mr Zazambi Tuelo.
The minister was answering a question in Parliament on November 25 asked by MP for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi who had asked him to state the number of people nominated as councillors in different councils.
He had also wanted the minister to state the number of those who were candidates for the ruling party in the just ended general elections among the nominated councillors.
Mr Mmolotsi had further asked the minister to state the number of those who were candidates in the recent primary elections of the BDP, and in addition to state the constituencies where the just nominated councillors at the Sowa Township Authority originated as well as the number of those recently nominated at the FCC and their names and the constituencies they came from.
