Miss RADP pageant in Maun

| September 17, 2015

Beauty contestants from Mababe, Khwai, Somelo and Phuduhudu in the Maun sub-region have been encouraged to aim for the national crown.

Addressing the contestants at the launch of the Miss RADP in Maun, Mowana investments manager, Charles Bangura, implored the beauty queens to make use of the boot camp that began on Monday September 14 to win the Maun tittle, which would earn the winner a slot in the nationals.

Bangura noted that the Miss RADP pageant was a platform for the participants to network and find means to address unemployment rate in their settlements. He said the pageant was an affirmative action to help the Rural Area Dwellers (RADs) to achieve sustainable development.

The Maun Administrative Authority (MAA) assistant council secretary, Mogomotsi Seemule reminded the queens that inward beauty was the real beauty since people were not responsible for their physical makeup.

She, therefore, said beauty queens must possess brains and character, reiterating that the pageant purposed to recognise and appreciate beauty from rural dwellers. She noted that women empowerment was a global phenomenon with Botswana government not an exception.

Miss RADP pageant, she said, nurtured talent and self-esteem of young women from remote areas, thus development of women. Seemule said the programme recognised beauty as a talent and encouraged contestants to celebrate their worth and use the platform for future endeavors.

A social welfare officer, Boitumelo John, said the organisers of the Miss RADP had introduced a prize for Miss Personality, that would recognise a queen with character and Botho.

John said the pageant had shown growth in the remote areas as witnessed by the number of contestants and revelers at the events. The former Ms RADP 2014 queen Bokamoso Obeditswe also encouraged the contestants to look beyond the crown and to aim higher in everything they set to pursue.

Twelve beauty queens will contest to select a beauty queen to represent the region at the national competitions. The inaugural Miss RADP pageant was won by a queen from Mababe in 2013 while in 2014 the title was scooped by a queen from Xhangwa, which both fall in the North West region.
