Mokwa: A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mohammed Ndarani, has called for more awareness on measures aimed at reducing the impact of future floods in Nigeria. Ndarani made the call during a condolence visit to the Mokwa victims where he also made a donation of N30 million to the victims.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the senior lawyer, who is also a traditional title holder of Hukuncin Nupe, was represented by Umar Sarki, the CEO of One Word Magazine. He emphasized that Nigeria should promote public awareness by educating communities about flood risks and preparing measures that enable proactive steps for self-protection and property safety.
Ndarani stated, “We all have critical roles to play to guard against or minimize floods’ devastating effects across the country, and also be prepared for quick response in times of disaster. This response must be part of a broader, long-term strategy that includes investment in infrastructure, capacity building, and public education.”
He stressed that the Mokwa tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in disaster management to assist in raising awareness, providing training, and supporting communities in developing disaster risk reduction plans. He highlighted the necessity for a coordinated and proactive approach to disaster preparedness, including effective early warning systems, infrastructure investment, and community engagement.
Ndarani advised that proper budgetary allocations be made to manage such crises readily when they arise. He called for comprehensive measures to reduce the impact of future floods and protect the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities across the country. He urged the federal government to apply the provisions of section 20 of the 1999 constitution to protect and improve the environment, and safeguard water, air, forest, and wildlife across Nigeria.
He also advised that necessary steps be taken to ensure water channels remain open and that property owners and developers adhere to existing building guidelines by relevant agencies. Ndarani expressed deep sorrow over the floods’ impact, praying for the departed souls and the quick recovery of those affected. He wished for Allah’s strength and resilience upon the affected families during this challenging time.
He affirmed his solidarity with the affected families and residents who have suffered loss, and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the state government and all partners in responding to this humanitarian crisis.
