Owerri: Imo Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it rehabilitated 33 drug users between July 2024 and June 2025. Commander of the NDLEA in Imo, Mr. Ibrahim Ohida, addressed newsmen in Owerri as part of activities marking the year 2025 United Nations Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ohida, a Commander of Narcotics, reported that the rehabilitated individuals were among 38 drug users counseled by the command during the specified period. Additionally, the command arrested 246 suspects and seized 631.61kg of hard drugs, including cannabis sativa, methamphetamine, and tramadol.
The NDLEA took 49 cases to court, resulting in 19 convictions. Ohida expressed gratitude to Gov. Hope Uzodimma’s wife, Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, for renovating the command’s rehabilitation facility and called for further government support, especially in providing operational vehicles.
The commander also thanked the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, for his logistical and moral support, which has bolstered the command’s operations. Gov. Uzodimma, represented by his Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, highlighted the state government’s donation of Hilux vans to support the command’s efforts.
Ohida urged collective efforts to tackle drug abuse in the state and advised drug users and traffickers to cease their activities, emphasizing the avoidable consequences of drug abuse and the possibility of a drug-free society. He stressed the importance of reporting drug traffickers to protect the future of the youth.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the week-long commemoration will include a quiz competition for students, a road walk with sister security agencies, Jumaat prayers, a church service, and a grand finale on June 26.
