Experience came in handy for Botswana senior netball team on Thursday November 5 as they thrashed the Under 21 side 47-37 in a friendly game at BONA courts.
Despite the loss, the Under 21 girls started the game impressively in the opening quarter dominating the veterans.
Young Letang Mogotlhwane and Sarona Hans did their assignment in the defence as they deflected and blocked shooters Portia Rasekhumba and Kempho Ngongorego in the circle.
Their shooters, Pearl Maribe and Boikanyo Selogetswe on the other hand converted passes well and looping balls into the goal mouth subsequently pressing on defenders Francinah Eyman and Oarabile Thapo of the senior team.
The first quarter culminated with the juniors leading 10-7 and they looked composed to smash their seniors little did they know the veterans would come stronger than ever.
Rasekhumba proved that experience was key as she took control of the game pressing harder on the young girls which saw the latter lapsing in the second quarter.
The juniors could not blend well giving away balls in the centre court which resulted in the seniors closing down the margin and even winning the second quarter 25-16.
The game lost momentum in the last half with players looking weary and the dark taking a toll on them.
Senior team’s Hildah Binang ignored the poor light condition and carried the team on her shoulders looping in balls with ease to the jubilation of the handful spectators.
Experience indeed proved necessary as it worked for the senior team who eventually won the three last quarters to become victors.
Meanwhile, the friendly fixture forms part of the junior team’s preparations for the impending Netball World Youth Cup to be held in Gaborone in 2017.
