The senior national netball team and Under 21 team will take part in the prestigious Mission Foods Nations Cup in Singapore on December 13-19.
As part of preparations for the games Botswana will play Singapore in friendly matches from Wednesday to Sunday.
In an interview on Saturday, Botswana Netball Association (BONA) president, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego, said the tournament was organised to prepare players for the Mission Foods of Nations Cup in Dercember.
“And this week, there will be friendly games against Singapore, and from these games, 15 players will be selected to represent the senior national team and 15 will be selected to represent the national under 21 team. They will travel to Singapore to represent Botswana in December,” she said.
Meanwhile, the BONA Spar Superstars Tournament which began on October 10 and ended on Saturday saw the Spar South, which had fielded most of former national team players in the likes of Gagotheko Tshelametsi, Tebogo Radipotsane, Beauty Letsholo, Tshegofatso Tlhabuswe, exuded experience prowess against the young team netting 39 scores against 24 of Future Stars.
On the Future Sars side, Tumisang Bagidi, Kgotlaetsile Kganetso, Chedza Matshaba shined through out the tournament supported by the former national team players in Hildar Binang and Ntebogang Motlakaleso.
On one hand Under 21 teams MaLittle South and MaLittle North battled it out in court but Ma Little North proved to be too strong from the beginning of the game winning balls through sound circle feeds netting 46 against 30 of MaLittle North. Despite the loss player of the tournament was the 14 year old Amantle Never who was the center player for MaLittle North who proved to be a tactful utility player supplying balls from the center with precision.
The overall tournament was won Spar South under the able coaching of Regent Pitso, “when we entered the tournament we came with a winning mentality, that is how we won the games,” he said.
Future Stars which comprised of under 21 players scooped position 2 of the tournament playing under guidance of coach Sithulile Mlotshwa who said she was impressed with the outcome however, “ there is need for training of mental strength and defense skills of the players, the attacking part, they are good but I noticed that we have poor circle feeds,” she said.
SNEAK PEEP INTO 2017 WORLD NETBALL YOUTH CUP
Botswana is scheduled to host 2017 World Netball Youth Cup and BONA President Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego says preparations are underway.
“The Local Organising Committee (LOC) will give updates in a month time we cannot disclose the information up until then but what I can say is that we still have a long way towards 2017. There is going to be a nationwide scouting for talented players,” said BONA president.
She said the association was excited of prospects of hosting the world cup which will see 20 teams from various nations battling it out for the trophy, “we are aware of the hard work ahead of us and it is encouraging to see volunteers coming on board, netball is for all of us it is not for so and so every Motswana who wants to participate for the Netball World Cup is welcome,” she said.
