Lagos: A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Devatop Centre for Africa Development, has trained 100 human rights activists on the effective usage of 'TALKAM' app to strengthen grassroots responses to abuse and promote digital justice. The training was held in partnership with the Intercultural Innovation Hub (IIH). According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Executive Director of Devatop, Mr. Joseph Osuigwe, stated that the workshop focused on advocacy and community engagement using the app. Represented by Lagos Project Lead, Miss Janet Homo, Osuigwe emphasized educating activists on leveraging the mobile platform for real-time reporting of human rights violations. He highlighted that the workshop, part of the Talkam Human Rights Initiative Project, took place in both Lagos and Cross Rivers states. It involved experts in human rights and digital advocacy, reaffirming Devatop's commitment to building a network of digitally skilled and proactive human rights defenders across Nigeria. The trainers guided partic ipants through sessions on human rights fundamentals, community-based mobilization, and navigating myths hindering advocacy efforts. A significant workshop feature was the introduction and hands-on use of the TALKAM App, teaching participants to submit cases, engage in the TALK Room, and provide feedback for app improvement. Facilitator Mr. Bemshima Abako addressed myths, emphasizing individual responsibility in protecting human rights, not just the government's role. During group discussions, advocate Prudence Inana stressed involving children in decision-making, while Ayoola Gandonu advocated for expanding the training to other states for broader impact. Reflecting on the training, newly trained advocate Mr. Anthony Oyigbeche expressed gratitude to Devatop for the knowledge shared and the smooth coordination of the program.
