Nigeria: Give Children’s Day a Meaning

[Leadership]A Thai saying is apt as Nigeria marks the Children’s Day today: “Children are the future of the nation; if the children are intelligent, the country will be prosperous.” Although every year since 1964 the Children’s Day has been marked across the country with pomp, fun and as a public holiday for primary and secondary school pupils, the essence of the Day has not been internalised. Successive administrations’ attitude to children’s rights has been uninspiring, insensitive and demeaning.
