Nigeria’s Health Sector Advances Amid Economic Reforms, Says Minister Uzoka-Anite

Washington d.c.: The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, has stated that Nigeria’s health sector is experiencing significant progress as a result of the Federal Government’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms. This announcement was made at the Health Works Leaders Coalition roundtable, held alongside the 2025 World Bank Group/International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings in Washington D.C.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Uzoka-Anite highlighted that strategic policy measures have enhanced financing and improved service delivery across the health sector. She noted that the Federal Government has increased funding for the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare by nearly 60% in the 2025 budget, underscoring a renewed focus on enhancing healthcare access and outcomes.

The minister elaborated that the government has expanded fiscal capacity through the introduction and periodic review of excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugar-sweetened beverages. The revenue generated from these taxes is being directed toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Additionally, medical equipment and drugs have been exempted from Value Added Tax (VAT), and substantial concessional financing has been secured under the HOPE operation to bolster healthcare infrastructure.

Uzoka-Anite called for a national compact to coordinate and align fiscal resources with national priorities, especially within the health sector. She praised the World Bank for recognizing Nigeria as a priority for showcasing its UHC compact and for selecting the nation to lead the Africa initiative for access to Medicines and Local Manufacturing (AIM 2030).

The minister also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, and other stakeholders in advancing reforms that are reshaping the country’s health landscape. She emphasized that this progress aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on enhancing the nation’s health and well-being.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s dedication to deepening reforms and promoting sustainable economic growth, Uzoka-Anite stressed that improved healthcare delivery remains a central component of Nigeria’s development agenda. She advocated for continued partnerships to foster inclusive growth, productivity, and equitable development.
