The office of the Ghanzi district commissioner and Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture (MYSC) carried out a clean-up exercise at the Botswana National Youth Council centre (BNYC) in Ghanzi over the weekend.
The district commissioner, Mr Andina Dintwa said the initiative was a way of giving back to the community and they have realised that the centre was underutilised due to lack of resources.
The work included cleaning of the yard, painting the buildings as well as building volleyball and netball courts.
The main objective is to make the facility a one stop centre for the district youth to keep them away from the streets, Mr Dintwa said.
He said Ghanzi township has no recreation centre and this would offer the youth a place to use computers and playing sports as well as help them hone their skills and interact with one another.
The centre will offer computer class, where the youth will be taught how to carry out research, writing curriculum vitae and other computer services. It also offers high speed Internet and Wi-Fi.
Principal programmes officer in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, Ms Tebogo Ntesang said they intend making benches and shades around the compound to enable the youth use the WI-FI even after working hours.
