Orapa United off to a good Premier League start

| September 19, 2013

BeMOBILE Premier League rookies, Orapa United – also known as Ostriches among their supporters – achieved what their fellow debutants in FC Satmos of Selebi-Phikwe and Wonder Sporting failed to do when they won their first match in the elite league.

The Debswana-backed team played their first game in front of the home crowd against Uniago Flamingo Santos of Gabane, and against all expectation, prevailed to a 2-1 victory.

The game started with both sides playing deep in their halves and cautious of not conceding an early goal. This rendered the first half a dull moment with no real challenge to both goalkeepers.

In the second half, both teams started to attack each other with Santos attacking the “Ostriches’’ from the wings. Kabo Molokwane was instrumental in the attacks while his colleagues in defence – marshaled by Olefile Magetse – thwarted the attacking efforts of ‘Ma 14’of Gabane. In the 67th minute, the Ostriches were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard area, and Magetse’s ball found Oaitse Leeme who beautifully headed the ball into the net, leaving Santos goalkeeper Kgosietsile Senjoba sprawled on the ground.

The goal seemed to have motivated the Dominic Changwe led team that now attacked Santos from all angles with telling passes. In the 72nd minute, Tumelo Mazebedi found the back of the net, putting the Ostriches two goals further from Santos. This second goal sent the home crowd wild, including General Manager of Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa mines Dr. Adrian Gale who was instrumental in the establishment of the team.

Santos, under the tutelage of Sexton Kowa, did not give up as they began to find their rhythm and played the carpet football they are known for. Substitute Senatla Molefhe who came in the second half brought life to the Santos side as his speed and dribbling skills proved difficult to contain for the Orapa United defence on the right flank.

In the 79th minute, Molefhe turned the Orapa United inside out before finding Mpho Kgaswane who put the ball into the net to give the Gabane side a consolation goal. Santos continued to pile pressure on Orapa United defence which had now become vulnerable and always caught napping. Thanks to the goal shy Santos strikers, the Orapa side managed to hold on to their slim lead to the end. The debut win for Orapa United will be a great motivation ahead of their next assignment against Serowe based Miscellaneous in Orapa this Wednesday.
