The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture (MYSC) has availed P13 million for Team Botswana’s participation at the Africa Games scheduled for Congo in September.
The chairperson of Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC), Solly Reikeletseng explained that the money would be used for the upkeep and travel of the team.
Briefing the media this week, Reikeletseng said P2.5 million had been allocated for preparations. The Africa Games will commence in Congo on September 5 and finish on September 18.
Reikeletseng said Botswana would send 140 delegates included three management personnel, eight medical personnel, 56 male athletes, 34 female athletes and 39 team officials.
The sporting codes that have qualified for the games include athletics with 18 athletes, athletics for visually impaired with 40, badminton with four, eight boxers, and one cyclist.
Judo will send three players, karate 13 players, four swimmers, four table tennis players, three taekwondo karatekas, four tennis players, the volleyball men and women’s teams and two weightlifters.
Reikeletseng said table tennis has already competed in Cape Town and was also planning an international friendly in August to prepare for the games.
He added that the athletics team was in China to partake in the World Championships, while the karate team was in Durban to compete in a championship and training at a high performance centre under an international instructor.
He also noted that the taekwondo team competed at the World Championships in Russia and obtained two gold medals and one silver. He said the swimming team has been in and would be going to China for high performance training in August.
Reikeletseng stated that the boxing team has been having local camps and would also be training in Morocco while the weightlifting team has also had a camp in Pretoria.
Reikeletseng said they were aiming for 20 medals. The team will depart on the first of September.
