Police investigate infant death

| January 22, 2014

Police in Sikwane are investigating a case in which a 15-year-old girl from Ramonaka is suspected to have murdered her one-year-old baby.

The incident happened last week Friday when the deceased infant’s grandmother discovered that her grandchild was not breathing.

The grandmother had left the child with its mother to fetch firewood. Upon her return she was informed by the mother that the child was napping, however when she realised that the child was not waking up she rushed her to the clinic.

Sikwane Station Commander Boipuso Baatsweng said the sudden death of the child was suspicious because he never had health challenges and he was fit when his grandmother left him that afternoon.

The 15 year old mother has been released from custody and investigations around the matter are on going.

Baatsweng said the incident is not the first one to occur in the village as late last year another young mother murdered her child.
