PVC Remains Proof of Civic Responsibility, Not Party Loyalty: Desmond Elliot

Lagos: The member representing Surulere 1 Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Desmond Elliot, emphasizes that the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is a testament to civic responsibility rather than a symbol of party allegiance. Elliot made this statement shortly after casting his vote at Onitolo Nursery/Primary School, Unit 009, in Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Lagos State Government is conducting elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions across all 20 local government areas and 37 local development council areas. Elliot clarified, 'PVC does not mean voting for my party. It means exercising your civic responsibility,' stressing the importance of participating in the democratic process.

Elliot further argued that individuals seeking government support should actively contribute to the democratic process through voting. He stated, 'You can't sit at home and later come to seek help from people who others sacrificed to vote into power.'

While acknowledging a slightly low turnout at the elections, Elliot remained optimistic about the potential for increased voter participation as the day progressed. He emphasized that local government elections should garner more engagement than presidential polls due to their direct impact on everyday life.

Elliot highlighted the significance of development at the grassroots level, noting that with powers and revenue now devolved to local governments, the election's outcome holds substantial importance. 'The outcome of this election will have a direct impact on the lives of citizens, making it crucial for voters to exercise their franchise wisely and elect leaders who will prioritize their needs and drive development in their areas,' he remarked.

He further advocated for increased public discussion regarding the responsibilities of local governments, underscoring their essential role in primary healthcare, market management, and maintenance of inner roads. Elliot also commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for the orderly conduct of the election.
