Quartet to Play in Singapore

Four netball players left for Singapore on January 19 to play in that country’s super league. The four are Hilda Binang, Sarona Hans, Letang Mokgotlhwane and Violet Oneile.

The players reportedly impressed the netball Singapore tournament selectors during the Six Nations Cup tournament.

Speaking during the send-off ceremony , which included signing of the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration on Women and Sport, the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Botlhogile Tshireletso said Botswana had credible women who would take the country to great heights.

“Today, we celebrate four young girls who are going to Singapore to make us proud, and I wish to encourage you to always know that good behaviour is very important, more especially that you will be working with other international sports ladies from different countries,” she said.

Tshireletso, who is also the patron of Botswana Netball Association (BONA), also emphasised botho, adding that the fact that it was included as an important aspect in the vision 2016 spoke volumes. She encouraged the players to represent the country well and work hard to put Botswana in the world map.

For her part, BONA president, Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego described women as powerful creatures that could make the world a better place. “Very often women do not realise and celebrate their own worth,” and it was obvious that the distribution of power in many aspects was skewed towards men, she said.

“I believe that I am a change agent that can actively contribute to the redistribution of that power. Sports and netball are dear to my heart and that is where I can make a change,” she said.

She urged all the sports leaders, volunteers and women to live and breathe the Helsinki Conference theme, “Lead the Change and Be the Change.”
