Sunday Standard Editor Outsa Mokone Arrested By Botswana Police [press release]

Sunday Standard Editor Outsa Mokone has been arrested by Botswana Police. Mokone was arrested on Monday 8 September 2014.

According to warrant of arrest issued by the Gaborone Magistrate Court Mr Mokone was arrested in connection with a “seditious intention contrary to section 50(1) (a) as read with section 51(1)(c) of the Penal Code” in respect of a story published by the Sunday Standard newspaper on 31 August 2014.

The article, headlined “President hit in a car accident while driving alone at night,” was considered by the State to be malicious and defamatory to President Ian Khama Seretse Khama.

According to a letter of complaint from the Attorney General Dr Attaliah Molokomme the contents of the story are defamatory of the good name and reputation of the President on his personal and private capacity. The Sunday Standard story alleged the President was involved in an accident while driving on a private errand on the night of Saturday 23 August 2014.

The Sunday Standard lawyers, Bayford and Associates, have applied for the immediate release of Mr Mokone. The bail application will be heard by the Lobatse high court today.
