Athletics coach Simon Eric says Botswana team is ready to conquer Africa at the 11th-edition of the Africa Games in Congo, Brazzaville.

Eric said in an interview that Nijel Amos and Isaac Makwala would join them after finishing their Diamond League races this week. He said Leaname Maotoanong, Pako Seribe and Sakarea Kamperuka have already left Beijing enroute to Brazzaville.

Team Botswana left for Congo on Tuesday in a branded Jet. Accompanied by Minister of Youth Sport and Culture Thapelo Olopeng and Botswana National Sports Commission chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, the team has promised to leave no stone unturned.

The medal target for athletics is four golds, two silvers, and three bronzes, and the coach pointed that they are ready to achieve that. However, the athletics team suffered a blow when 100 and 200 metre runner Baboloki Thebe dropped from the team due to injury.

He was part of the 4×100 relay team which means our plans were ruined, but we have a pool of good athletes who are going to soldier on. We are going to strategise so that the relay team brings a medal home, he said.

Yateya Kambepera, who has been missing in action since 2012 because of hamstring injuries, said his times have indicated that his body was responding well in training.

The 100 metre national record holder said his mission in Congo is to record a good time and also finish at the podium, while 800 metre runner, Boitumelo Masilo said he was determined to fight and raise the country’s flag high.

The athletics team comprises, among others; Amos, Tsaone Sebele, Makwala, Christine Botlogetswe, Leaname Maotoanong, Goitseone Seleka, Pako Seribe, Kgalalelo Gaboitsiwe, Sakarea Kamperuka, Galefele Moroko, Kambepera, Boitumelo Masilo, Onkabetse Nkobolo, Calvin Dikomane, Kabelo Kgosiemang, Gobe Takobana and Stephanous Beaukes.
