VOA Our Voices 319: Three Decade Quest for Press Freedom

Covid-19 has exposed the challenges many journalists worldwide face in the line of duty, as government’s attempt to suppress information about the pandemic. A sad reality, 30-years after the Windhoek Declaration that led to World Press Freedom Day, which calls on governments to respect free, independent, and diverse media. There’ve been some gains, Tanzania being one, but media watchdog groups remain concerned about the lack of press freedom. This week, on Our Voices, we examine the media landscape in Africa, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the challenges it has exposed for female journalists. We’ll also speak with veteran journalist, Shaka Ssali as he retires from VOA.
