Abuja: Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condolences to Nigerians following the passing of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais. The former president conveyed his grief over the loss, acknowledging Uwais’s distinguished career as both a lawyer and a judge.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, released a statement in Abuja highlighting Uwais’s significant role in bringing justice closer to the people. Buhari noted that Uwais was admired for his compassion and dedication to justice, contributing to the strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic framework. He further emphasized Uwais’s meticulous approach to law as both a judge and a member of the Council of States.
Buhari extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of Uwais, acknowledging the shared grief of the nation. Uwais’s career in the Nigerian judicial system began in the 1960s, during which he held various positions, including state counsel and senior state counsel, before eventually serving in the Court of Appeal for 16 years.
Justice Mohammed Uwais also played a pivotal role as the chairman of the Electoral Reforms Committee. His educational background included studies at the Institute of Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, the University of London, and the Inn of Court, School of Law.
