Abuja: Some stakeholders have called for investments in transformational leadership to ensure speedy development in the country. The stakeholders made the call on Friday in Abuja at a symposium organised by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) to mark the sixth anniversary of Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman as Director-General.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the symposium had as its theme: ‘Reflecting on the Six Years of Impact: A Symposium in Honour of Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, DG of NILDS.’ In his keynote address, Founder of GOTNI Leadership Centre, Mr. Linus Okorie, emphasised the need for transformational leadership in the country. Okorie described transformational leadership as a concept that prioritises people, is inspired by a compelling vision, and upholds sound principles that change both leaders and followers, leading to an encompassing outcome.
Okorie highlighted Nigeria’s abundant resources, vibrant population, and enviable geo-strategic position in Africa as assets that require effective leadership to harness. For national transformation to occur, he argued, leadership must transcend positional authority to achieve purpose-driven impact, with a focus on the common good in both public and private sectors.
Mr. Adebowale Olorunmola, the Country Representative of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, stressed the importance of reflecting on the ongoing leadership crisis in Nigeria. He advocated for continuous dialogue until suitable leaders occupy every position across the nation. Despite the presence of transformational leaders, Olorunmola noted that Nigeria lags behind its peers in development, urging investments in current and future leaders, particularly the youth.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Sen. Victor Umeh, praised the performance of NILDS under Sulaiman’s leadership. Akpabio lauded the director-general’s qualities, describing him as dogged and resilient. He noted that NILDS has become a hub for developing lawmakers’ skills, achieving its purpose under Sulaiman’s guidance.
Mr. Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga-Africa, tasked Sulaiman with finding intellectual solutions to political party defections and promoting women’s inclusion in politics and leadership. Itodo also urged Sulaiman to advocate for electoral reforms and the passage of a new Electoral Act before the year’s end.
In response, Sulaiman expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for his appointment and support, asserting the institute’s potential to mentor younger generations and contribute positively to the country, despite challenges from individuals attempting to undermine it.
The symposium concluded with the inauguration of the NILDS Journal on Law Review and a cake-cutting ceremony in honour of Sulaiman. Notable achievements during his tenure include the establishment of Democracy Radio (104.9) to reach grassroots audiences and the Legislative Centre for Security Analysis to support efforts against insecurity, among others.
