Abuja: The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a call for a strategic approach to enhance security and safeguard lives and properties in Northern Nigeria. This call was made in a statement by Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of CAN 19 Northern States and FCT.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the statement, which doubles as an Easter Greeting titled ‘2025 Easter: A Call to Renewed Sacrifice, National Healing, and the Role of Women in Rebuilding Northern Nigeria’, coincides with the global celebration of Easter by Christians. The statement emphasizes the need for adequate compensation and rehabilitation for victims of insurgency and violence in the region. Hayab highlighted the importance of girl-child education as a foundation for societal progress and urged the implementation of inclusive policies that promote justice, equity, and human dignity.
Hayab also underscored the necessity of establishing and supporting community-based peacebuilding and trauma-healing initiatives, particularly for victims of violence and displaced persons. In his Easter message, he extended greetings to the Christian faithful and all Nigerians, reflecting on the spiritual significance of Easter and its message of hope and renewal.
He urged Nigerians to rise above selfish interests, fear, and disunity, especially amid the challenges of insecurity, moral decline, and leadership issues in the northern region. In 2025, CAN’s northern wing is emphasizing the critical role of women in rebuilding society, drawing on historical and biblical examples of women’s transformative impact.
Hayab stressed the importance of empowering women and girls through education, mentorship, and opportunities, noting that denying girls education threatens the future. He called on parents to prioritize their children’s education and moral upbringing as sacred duties, and for leaders to prioritize the well-being of their people.
He also addressed the sorrow and grief caused by ongoing violence in Northern Nigeria, particularly in Plateau and Benue states, urging urgent action against criminal activities. Hayab called on communities and government at all levels to play their part in fostering peace and unity.
Concluding his message, Hayab expressed hope that the Easter celebration would renew faith and values, and strengthen the resolve to build a peaceful Northern Nigeria and a greater nation. He wished all Nigerians a joyful and meaningful Easter celebration, with special blessings for the women of Northern Nigeria.
