Lagos: The Lagos Egbeda Lions Club has donated exercise books to pupils of Ore Ofe Nursery and Primary School, Agege, and State Primary School, Dopemu, as part of activities marking the World Literacy Day.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Ijeoma Udeh, President of Lagos Egbeda Lions Club, District 404B3 Nigeria, explained that the gesture was part of the club’s ‘Back-to-School’ service project. The donation aimed to support pupils, including those with special needs, and ease the burden on parents.
Udeh emphasized the importance of providing basic learning materials to children, likening it to giving a child the tools needed to work on a farm. During the visit to Ore Ofe School, other needs such as equipping the school’s sick bay and improving its water supply were identified. The club plans to deliberate on further support, aligning with Lions Club International’s commitment to education and community development.
Since July, under Udeh’s presidency, the club has undertaken projects including fre
e blood donations to the Lagos State Blood Bank. Upcoming activities focus on pediatric care, cancer awareness, diabetes, environmental issues, hunger relief, disaster support, and vision care.
Mrs. Masaku Abiola from the Social Mobilisation Department of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Agege Local Government Area, commended the club’s efforts, highlighting the significant impact on vulnerable pupils. She expressed hope for the pupils’ future success and their potential to help others.
Precious Peter, a Primary Five pupil at Ore Ofe School, expressed gratitude on behalf of her classmates, noting the positive reception from her family and the intention to make good use of the donated books for learning.
