According to News Agency of Nigeria, the award ceremony, organised by Face of Democracy Nigeria (FDN), celebrates women who have made significant contributions to peace-building and national development. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, was the recipient of the AIWRA 2024 award, leading the voting process among four other first ladies.

The awards highlight the achievements of women in Nigeria, who are increasingly breaking barriers in various professions. The First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mrs. Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi, along with Ghana’s Rebecca Naa Okaikor Akufo-Addo and Benin Republic’s Madam Claudine Talon, were among other notable recipients of the 2024 awards.

Mrs Ginika-Tor Williams, in her response to the award, emphasized her commitment to justice and human rights advocacy. She expressed her dedication to ensuring the representation of the common man across all sectors of the nation. Williams remarked, “Being the iconic personality of the year reminds me that there is more work to be done… It goes a long way to tell me that I have to continue to be the best in everything I do, to try to project the system in a positive light, and to try to remain steadfast in what I believe in.”

She called on women to unite, not as competitors but as supporters, stating, “It doesn’t really matter what you are going through because everyone is striving, but you’ve got to show society the real you.”

Another awardee, Mrs Rabia Usoro, CEO of Hareem Istanbul and co-founder of We Make Magic Studios, highlighted the impact women can have when empowered. She stated, “I have dedicated my life to empowering women. So, I try to be a role model for them.”
