Former President Goodluck Jonathan Pledges Lifelong Commitment to Peace and Humanity


Abuja: Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reaffirmed his dedication to fostering peace and serving humanity, both nationally and globally. This commitment was expressed during a reception in Abuja organized by the ‘Friends of Dr Goodluck Jonathan’ in celebration of his 2025 Sunhak Global Peace Prize Award, which he received in Seoul, South Korea.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Jonathan articulated his lifelong aspiration to make a positive impact and promote peace. During the event, he emphasized his ongoing commitment to these values, stating, “I will continue to do my little best until the last day I will live on earth. I believe that’s the only way I can serve God, by serving man.”



Reflecting on his upbringing, Jonathan shared that his humble beginnings instilled in him a deep empathy for those in distress and a desire to alleviate suffering. Despite the challenges inherent in leadership, he expressed a wish for every Nigerian to live without want.



Jonathan acknowledged the organizers of the Sunhak Global Peace Prize Award for recognizing his efforts, admitting his surprise at the honor. He also expressed gratitude to those who attended the reception and offered words of encouragement.



Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, praised Jonathan’s contributions to Nigeria’s peace and democratic process. Obi highlighted that Jonathan’s leadership and sacrifices are worthy of ongoing celebration, particularly on a day like Easter, which symbolizes sacrifice.



Azibaola Robert, Chief Host and Managing Director of Kakatar Group, commended Jonathan’s global recognition and described him as a passionate advocate for peace. Robert noted that Jonathan’s legacy as a politician and statesman continues to inspire.



Ambassador Hassan Tukur, former Principal Private Secretary to Jonathan, lauded the former president’s role in resolving international conflicts, including those in C´te d’Ivoire, Kenya, and Mali. Tukur emphasized Jonathan’s continued efforts through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation to promote peace and stability.



Former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, also praised Jonathan, calling him a patriot and a transformative leader. Maku recalled Jonathan’s historic decision in 2015 to peacefully concede power, which set a precedent in Nigerian politics.



Prominent figures, including Dame Patience Jonathan and King Amalate Turner, attended the event, celebrating Jonathan’s achievements and contributions to peace. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Jonathan’s award marks him as the first African leader to receive the Sunhak Peace Prize, joining the ranks of former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.



Established in 2015, the Sunhak Peace Prize honors those who have made significant contributions to global peace, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and ecological conservation.
