Abuja: A human rights organization has praised the Nigerian military for its outstanding progress in enhancing national security, particularly in combating terrorism and banditry. The group, in a statement released by its Secretary General, Tijjani Lawal, expressed their support for President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election in 2027, attributing recent security successes to his administration’s strategic initiatives.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Lawal commended the leadership of the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, emphasizing the remarkable progress achieved under his direction over the past two years. He highlighted the strategic actions and sacrifices of Nigerian troops, which have notably advanced the fight against insecurity, especially in the northern region. Lawal noted the significant achievements of the Defence Ministry in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), including dismantling strongholds of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (I
SWAP).
The Secretary General pointed out that these efforts have resulted in the elimination of numerous high-value terrorists and the reclaiming of vast territories previously under terrorist control. This progress not only demonstrates the military’s tactical proficiency but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing transnational threats. Lawal further mentioned the Defence Ministry’s enhanced intelligence sharing and deployment of advanced surveillance technologies in the Lake Chad region, which have strengthened cross-border response capabilities essential for countering multifaceted security crises.
Lawal also praised the resilience and adaptability of Nigerian troops in tackling challenges such as desperate attacks in the northeast and rampant banditry and kidnappings in the northwest. Under the visionary leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has prioritized security as a key governance pillar, the Defence Ministry has been invigorated with a renewed sense of
purpose. The President’s directive, “Enough is enough,” serves as both a rallying cry for the military and a call for national unity in overcoming threats to peace and stability.
The group highlighted that President Tinubu’s political will has galvanized efforts nationwide, fostering collaboration among stakeholders in the security sector. This collaborative approach has yielded tangible results, including the neutralization of over 13,500 terrorists and criminals and the rescue of nearly 10,000 hostages. The operational successes in Nigeria’s northeast, northwest, and north-central regions attest to the effectiveness of the government’s strategies.
Lawal remarked that the disruption of criminal networks and the neutralization of bandit kingpins have restored peace to many communities, allowing displaced citizens to return home. The resurgence of socio-economic activities in previously violence-stricken areas indicates the tangible impact of military efforts on ordinary Nigerians’ lives. He emphasized that
achieving lasting peace requires a holistic approach, integrating military action with socio-economic development and robust governance.
