Owerri: The Imo House of Assembly has advised Governor Hope Uzodimma to instruct the Ministry of Education to swiftly implement a special computer training programme for senior secondary school (SS3) students. This recommendation was made during a plenary session through a motion sponsored by Mr. Kingsley Ozurumba, representing Isu Constituency.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the assembly also emphasized the need for special training for external students preparing for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination (JAMB) in the state. Mr. Ozurumba highlighted computer illiteracy as a significant challenge for students in rural areas, which negatively impacts their performance in UTME examinations. He pointed out the lack of access to computers in these areas and the financial constraints of parents and guardians in providing such resources.
Mr. Ozurumba noted that JAMB consistently conducts its examinations using modern technology, which necessitates collaboration between the Ministries of Education and Digital Economy to establish a special training programme for SS3 students and external candidates. He proposed that the training be organized using three pilot schools in each local government area, where other schools can send their students for preparation.
The motion received support from several members of the assembly. Mr. Kanayo Onyemaechi from Owerri West Constituency stated that the programme would enhance the students’ digital skills and better prepare them for the future. Mr. Ugochukwu Amuchie from Aboh Mbaise expressed that the proposal would ensure proper channeling of computer skills through an improved educational curriculum. Mr. Chisom Ojukwu from Nkwere Constituency emphasized the importance of digital technology knowledge for the children’s future.
After additional contributions in support of the motion, Speaker Mr. Chike Olemgbe approved the recommendations.
