Kano State Aims for N200 Billion IGR with NIN-Based Tax Reform

Kano: The Kano State Board of Internal Revenue (KIRS) is setting its sights on generating N200 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through a new tax reform strategy that incorporates the National Identification Number (NIN).

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Executive Chairman of KIRS, Dr. Zaid Abubakar, highlighted this ambitious target during a recognition ceremony for individuals and organizations that have supported the agency’s efforts despite existing challenges. Since 2024, KIRS has made notable progress in tax compliance, revenue generation, and efficient service delivery, attributed to sustained reforms and collaboration with relevant partners.

A significant milestone in these efforts is the introduction of an electronic tax system that requires the NIN for registration. This development has led to a steady increase in NIN enrollment in Kano, with 10.2 million enrollees recorded to date. Dr. Abubakar stated that KIRS aims to register at least two million taxpayers, each contributing a minimum of N100,000 annually, to achieve the estimated N200 billion IGR goal.

The integration of the NIN aims to solve identification challenges, ensuring transparency and accountability in tax administration. Dr. Abubakar noted that Kano is currently second to Lagos State in tax revenue but expressed optimism that Kano could surpass Lagos due to its population advantage and ongoing reforms.

Dr. Abubakar projected that with six million registered and active taxpayers each contributing N100,000 annually, Kano could potentially generate N600 billion annually. He reiterated KIRS’s commitment to enhancing IGR in Kano and acknowledged Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s support in providing an enabling environment for these reforms.

The event also saw Isa Yargaya recognized as the Staff of the Year, receiving a cash prize of N1.5 million and a Renewed Hope house from the state government. Zaradeen Umar, the second runner-up, was awarded N1 million and a Renewed Hope house. Additionally, ten other staff members were honored for their outstanding contributions.
