Lagos Unveils 20-Year Strategic Blueprint for Traffic Management

Lagos: The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, has announced that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will introduce an ambitious 20-year strategic blueprint aimed at improving traffic management within the state. Giwa made this announcement during a news conference in Lagos, held to commemorate LASTMA’s 25th anniversary.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the blueprint is designed to recalibrate LASTMA’s operations to better handle the challenges of increasing urbanization and the anticipated rise in vehicular demands. The theme of the conference, ‘Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations,’ highlights the strategic alignment with smart governance, participatory policymaking, and digital innovation.

Giwa emphasized that as LASTMA celebrates this milestone, it remains committed to its mission of fostering safer roads, enforcing lawful conduct, and enhancing the commuting experience in Lagos. He noted that traffic management is a shared responsibility that involves collaboration among the government, citizens, and the private sector.

The anniversary serves as an opportunity to reflect on LASTMA’s achievements over the past 25 years, which include digital transformation, capacity enhancement, excellence in emergency response, public engagement, inter-agency collaboration, and infrastructure expansion. Giwa credited these accomplishments to the leadership and foresight of those who have guided the agency since its inception in 2000.

The forthcoming second Lagos Traffic Conference, set for July 15 at Eko Hotels and Suites, will bring together policymakers, transport experts, academics, and civic leaders to address mobility challenges and develop innovative solutions. Giwa stated that this event will not only celebrate past achievements but also serve as a call to future responsibilities.

Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, reassured Lagos residents that the organization is committed to becoming more vibrant and resourceful. He highlighted plans to fully embrace technology for informed decision-making and planning over the next two years.
