LASIEC Commits to Conducting Inclusive and Credible Local Government Elections

Lagos: The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has pledged to conduct an inclusive and credible local government election, ensuring that every eligible citizen can participate in the democratic process. LASIEC’s Chairman, Justice Omobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, made this commitment during a forum organized by the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) in Lagos, as preparations intensify ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile emphasized the importance of inclusivity in democracy, stating that “democracy thrives when it is inclusive, participatory and truly reflects the diversity of society.” She affirmed that LASIEC is dedicated to ensuring that no one is left behind, highlighting the constitutional and fundamental human right of citizens to vote and be voted for. The Chairman stressed the need for equal participation opportunities for all eligible citizens, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic background.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile underscored the role of trust and public confidence in achieving free, fair, and credible elections. She noted that such trust is built through the active involvement of stakeholders like CCD and others. “It’s about removing barriers and ensuring everyone is included in the democratic process,” she reiterated. To encourage participation, LASIEC has distributed application forms free of charge to women, youths, and persons with disabilities (PwDs).

LASIEC is fully prepared for the July 12 elections and expects a large voter turnout. The commission is committed to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a transparent, inclusive, and conclusive election process. Okikiolu-Ighile revealed plans to provide assistive materials, such as magnifying glasses and braille, at all voting centers to facilitate participation by all voters, including those with disabilities.

The LASIEC chair also assured residents of maximum security for all voters and candidates during the polls. She called on stakeholders to educate and sensitize community members on their voting rights and participation, reinforcing LASIEC’s commitment to maintaining public confidence through transparency in the electoral process.

Speaking at the event, CCD Programme Officer Mrs. Christiana Njoku highlighted the significance of credible and inclusive electioneering processes. She praised LASIEC’s efforts in supporting inclusion, particularly for persons with disabilities, while urging the commission to intensify its efforts by providing additional assistive tools such as braille and interpreters. Njoku emphasized the need for a conducive environment that enables all PwD clusters to vote on July 12.
