Makueni: The Makueni county government plans to empower 100 households per ward to prevent land conflicts. The county solicitor, Jennifer Kyumwa, highlighted the emotive nature of land issues, indicating that the initiative aims to educate residents on succession matters to alleviate family conflicts in the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kyumwa stated that through this arrangement, the county ensures beneficiaries receive title deeds after educating them on managing a deceased person’s estate in each of the 30 wards. Speaking during a meeting with residents of Kee ward, Makueni Sub County at the Kivani social hall, the Solicitor emphasized that Governor Mutula Kilonzo’s main agenda focuses on economic empowerment and reducing family conflicts.
Kyumwa noted, “We are targeting about 100 households per ward; after the conclusion of sensitization on the succession process, we will follow up with the beneficiaries and ensure they get title deeds.” However, she revealed that many individuals are unable to acquire title deeds due to their lack of understanding of succession matters, leading to lengthy court cases.
Kyumwa expressed optimism that post-sensitization, many individuals in the county will be more knowledgeable and adhere to land law. Meanwhile, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman for the Lower Eastern region, Makau Mutua, urged local residents to take advantage of the programs initiated by the county government to become informed on succession matters.
Mutua remarked, “This exercise will help the people a lot because they will acquire knowledge on how to solve the ever-sensitive land matters and avert unnecessary conflicts. Most people inherit land without following the right procedure; this sensitization will greatly assist them.”
