Abuja: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed its openness to discussions regarding the legalisation of cannabis oil, citing potential health benefits. Retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, Chairman of NDLEA, articulated this stance during a stakeholders’ workshop held in Abuja, titled “Cannabis Oil Debate: The Path Forward for Nigeria.”
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the workshop, organised by the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), aimed to evaluate scientific evidence concerning the therapeutic uses of cannabis oil. It also reviewed international best practices related to the regulation, production, and distribution of cannabis oil. Furthermore, the workshop addressed Nigeria’s existing legal and policy framework pertaining to cannabis oil use, seeking to produce evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders.
Marwa highlighted that despite the agency’s significant seizures of cannabis in recent years, the NDLEA acknowledges the scientific potential of cannabis oil. “For us at the NDLEA, our position on cannabis oil is simple, we welcome dialogue,” Marwa stated, emphasizing the need for informed choices based on thorough examination of facts rather than external pressures or interests. He stressed the importance of safeguarding public health and safety in any future policy developments.
Prof. Abubakar Sambo, President of NAS, underscored the necessity for Nigeria to adopt a more proactive stance on cannabis use, acknowledging its potential benefits for social development while also considering its risks. Represented by Prof. Friday Okonofua, Sambo advocated for reform-oriented approaches to cannabis legislation.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, represented by Dr. Samuel Adekola, echoed these sentiments, calling for a balanced approach to cannabis legalisation. He emphasized the importance of a regulatory framework that prioritises public safety and responsible use under medical supervision.
Prof. Musbau Akanji, Chairman of the NAS Consensus Study Committee on Cannabis Oil and Use in Nigeria, concluded that an evidence-based approach is crucial for the ongoing debate on cannabis oil legalisation. The committee, comprising experts from various fields, aims to guide the discussion with comprehensive research and analysis.
