NEMA and PTD Collaborate to Address Tanker Crashes in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara

Sokoto: The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) have announced a collaborative effort aimed at reducing the increasing number of tanker crashes on roads in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Alhaji Aliyu Kafindangi, the NEMA Zonal Head responsible for the three states, disclosed this initiative during a public awareness event organized by the agency in Sokoto. The collaboration also includes the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Fire Service (FFS), and State Fire Services. The objective is to improve response mechanisms to tanker crashes, minimize casualties, and ensure that victims receive timely emergency services.

Kafindangi expressed concern over the growing number of tanker crashes, noting that subsequent fuel scoping and hazards often result in loss of lives and properties. He emphasized the importance of collective action, urging community leaders and the public to work together with disaster management teams to prevent such incidents. Sensitization exercises have been conducted in various locations across the three states to raise awareness.

In his address, Mr. Ibn Umar, Head of the FFS Sokoto Zonal Office, discussed fire outbreak precautionary measures and immediate actions to take after tanker crashes. He also urged authorities to address the condition of Nigerian roads and cautioned against underage driving and traffic regulation violations by the drivers’ union.

Mr. Abdullahi MaiKano, FRSC Sector Commander, shared plans to establish additional FRSC outposts in key locations to enable quick intervention during tanker crashes. He assured continued collaboration with stakeholders and state governments to identify high-risk areas for these outposts. MaiKano also highlighted the importance of educating children about the dangers associated with tanker crashes and fuel spills.

The News Agency of Nigeria further reported that discussions were conducted on offering prompt response and implementing precautionary measures to address the issue effectively.
