Baku: Climate change activist Sam Onuigbo has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s progress in energy transition efforts during the ongoing 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference, CoP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Onuigbo shared these insights in a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Onuigbo, who previously served as a federal lawmaker, highlighted the Climate Change Act and the National Council on Climate Change Nigeria as pivotal developments. These initiatives, which he sponsored while in the House of Representatives, have established a framework for implementing climate change policies in Nigeria.
Onuigbo, who also serves on the Governing Board as a representative of the South-East and chairs the Committee on Security, Climate Change, North-East Development Commission, emphasized the significance of the Compressed Natural Gas initiative introduced by the Bola Tinubu administration. This initiative is seen as a critical move towards reducing relia
nce on fossil fuel vehicles.
Furthermore, Onuigbo noted that the Electricity Act 2023 is instrumental in advancing cleaner energy solutions. The Act facilitates the liberalization of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across Nigeria, empowering states, companies, and individuals to partake in these activities. It also allows private investors to acquire licenses for generation, transmission, and systems operations.
Onuigbo mentioned that CoP29 serves as a platform for Nigeria to attract investment in climate change initiatives. He stated that Nigeria’s delegation intends to showcase the country’s climate change market to potential international investors.
