Nigeria and China Deepen Ties at Joint Independence and National Day Celebration


Lagos: Nigeria and China on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to stronger ties as both nations jointly marked Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary and China’s 76th National Day. The celebration, which also coincided with the Mid-Autumn Festival, brought together government officials, diplomats, business leaders, cultural groups, and students in Lagos.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-China Relations, Mr. Jaafaru Yakubu, praised China’s Consul General in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, for her role in elevating bilateral relations. He described her as ‘a true friend of Nigeria,’ acknowledging her contributions in facilitating business partnerships, scholarships for students, and cultural exchanges that strengthen people-to-people ties.



Yakubu also commended Dr. Eric Ni, Chairman of the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association, for advocating business collaborations that have created jobs, encouraged technology transfer, and supported community development. He highlighted the contributions of Chinese companies in Nigeria towards infrastructure development while emphasizing their focus on local content and sustainable growth.



He called for deeper collaboration in renewable energy, the digital economy, healthcare, and agriculture, urging China to expand educational opportunities for Nigerian and Chinese students. Representing the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Simon Omo-Ezomo stated that cooperation with China aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes industrialization, diversification, and job creation, providing a platform for shared prosperity through mutual economic engagement.



Dr. Ni encouraged the Chinese community to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development while celebrating the enduring bonds of friendship between the two countries. He noted that the event’s unique convergence represents the harmony between China and Nigeria, two nations with rich histories and growing friendship.



The event was highlighted by vibrant cultural performances from the Hauxing Arts Troupe, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Overseas Chinese performers, and other groups.
