Presidential Prerogative of Mercy Under Final Review, No Inmates Released Yet

Abuja: The Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has clarified that no inmate has been released under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise, as the process is currently undergoing its final administrative review.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Fagbemi conveyed this information during an interview in Abuja. He emphasized that the process is in its concluding administrative phase, which involves a thorough review to ensure that all names and recommendations comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any release instrument is issued.

Fagbemi explained that the last stage of the exercise, following approval by the Council of State, involves the issuance of the instrument for implementing decisions regarding each beneficiary. This phase allows for a final examination of the list for any necessary remedial actions before forwarding the instrument to the Controller-General of Corrections for implementation.

The minister highlighted that this verification process is
a standard protocol, reflecting the government’s dedication to transparency and due diligence. He expressed gratitude for the public’s vigilance and constructive feedback, which he believes continues to enhance institutional integrity.

Fagbemi welcomed public engagement, seeing it as evidence of Nigerians’ deep concern for justice and good governance. He assured that there is no delay in the process, as it is adhering strictly to legal procedures to ensure that only those qualified benefit from the President’s mercy. Once all legal and procedural verifications are completed, the public will be informed accordingly, he added, stressing that the rule of law prioritizes fairness over speed.
