Abuja: Some stakeholders have tasked female journalists to demystify security operations, amplify causes of conflict, and promote community-based solutions that will enhance national peace and stability in Nigeria. They made this call at the inaugural conference on ‘Curbing Insecurity: The Role of Female Journalists in National Security,’ organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Zone D.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State for FCT, underscored the critical role women journalists play in ensuring peace and security both domestically and nationally. She emphasized the unique position female journalists hold in shaping narratives and fostering national unity. Mahmoud also addressed the challenges faced by female journalists, including safety risks, gender-based harassment, and limited representation in decision-making platforms, urging for policy reforms and advocacy to overcome these obstacles.
Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs, called upon female journalists to be intentional agents of change, amplifying the voices of the marginalized and promoting national unity. Represented by Mrs. Jummai Idonije, her Special Assistant on Women and Community Engagement, Sulaiman-Ibrahim highlighted the strategic position of female journalists in informing, inspiring, and mobilizing for peace.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the need for collaboration to address threats such as banditry, kidnapping, and cybercrime. Represented by Onne Ikwen, Strategic Communication Officer, Adejobi noted the powerful voice of female journalists in uncovering hidden stories and promoting peace through responsible reporting.
Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, Vice President of NAWOJ Zone D, highlighted the security challenges in the North-Central region and the role female journalists can play in mitigating these issues. She called for collaboration with CSOs and academia to improve reporting depth and accuracy, ensuring accountability among critical stakeholders.
The event also featured panel discussions and the conferment of awards to Mrs. Ese Eniola-Williams, Assistant Editor-in-Chief, News Agency of Nigeria, and others for their contributions and commitment to the association.
