Supreme Court Chief Registrar Encourages Judiciary Reporters to Uphold Balanced and Objective Journalism

Abuja: The Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Mr. Kabir Akanbi, has urged members of the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents (NAJUC) to ensure that their reporting remains balanced, fair, and objective. Akanbi made this appeal during a courtesy visit by the Executive Members of the NAJUC Abuja Chapter.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akanbi emphasized the importance of protecting the judiciary’s image and credibility with well-informed, unbiased, and factual reporting. He expressed concern over disappointing reports about the judiciary circulating in public spaces, particularly on social media platforms.

Akanbi highlighted that while some reports focus on the perceived mistakes of a few, the majority of judicial officers are honorable individuals who perform their duties commendably. He pointed out that unfair labeling of the judiciary due to a few lapses is unpatriotic and unjust.

He mentioned that the National Judicial Council is addressing issues related to a few identified errant officers to uphold the integrity of the judiciary. Akanbi criticized sensational reports aimed at gaining attention, which negatively affect Nigeria’s reputation.

Akanbi noted that many reports target judicial officers who lack dedicated information officers or personal assistants to defend them. Consequently, unverified reports often lead to public misconception and tarnish Nigeria’s image internationally.

In response, Mr. Kayode Lawal, Chairman of NAJUC Abuja Chapter, expressed gratitude to Akanbi for hosting the association’s executive members. He emphasized the role of judiciary correspondents as spokespersons for judicial officers and stressed the need for harmony between the judiciary and the media.

Lawal acknowledged the challenges Akanbi faces in his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to lead effectively, given his extensive legal and administrative experience. He assured Akanbi of NAJUC’s commitment to factual and fair reporting of judicial matters.

Furthermore, Mr. Tobi Soniyi, Special Assistant (Media) to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, highlighted the long-standing relationship between NAJUC and the Supreme Court, calling for its continuation and strengthening.
