Maiduguri: The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, emphasized that the ongoing conflict with Boko Haram and Islamic States West African Province (ISWAP) is directed against Nigeria as a nation and not solely against its armed forces. Abubakar made these remarks during a media tour with Defence Correspondents in Maiduguri.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abubakar described the insurgency as an asymmetric warfare that presents unique challenges. He urged the media to recognize terrorism as a threat against the entire nation. He further highlighted the sacrifices made by troops in stabilizing communities affected by the insurgents’ activities and noted the military’s commitment to upholding human rights during operations.
Maj.-Gen. Abubakar stressed the importance of acknowledging the efforts of the troops, who endure harsh weather conditions while deployed in various locations. He called for media support to help appreciate the soldiers’ dedication, emphasizing that the conflict is a national issue rather than a battle against the armed forces alone.
Brig.-Gen. Adamu Ibrahim, Chief of Staff for Operation Hadin Kai, explained the military’s stance on not prosecuting female terrorists. Citing Nigeria’s commitment to international armed conflict laws, he stated that women and children of Boko Haram members are protected as long as they do not participate in combat. He reinforced that the military adheres to human rights laws in their engagements.
Providing an overview of Operation Hadin Kai, Maj. Ademola Owolana highlighted the challenges faced by the Joint Task Force Northeast in countering insurgent activities. He identified drone attacks, fifth columnists, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as significant obstacles. Despite these challenges, Owolana reported the troops’ resilience and successes, such as a recent victory in Kukawa where 28 terrorists were neutralized.
Owolana noted the terrorists’ continued attacks on isolated communities to gather logistics and recruit fighters, indicating their desperation to demonstrate strength and prepare for future offensives across the theatre of operation.
