Tinubu Approves N2bn for Niger Flood Victims’ Resettlement


Mokwa: President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the allocation of N2 billion to expedite the reconstruction of homes for individuals affected by the recent flooding in Mokwa, Niger. Vice President Kashim Shettima revealed this development during his visit to the flood victims in Mokwa town, situated in the Mokwa Local Government Area.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Shettima emphasized that the Federal Government is committed to addressing the concerns raised by those impacted by the flood. He conveyed President Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences to the people of Mokwa and assured them that collaboration with the Niger Government would resolve the issues presented by the disaster.



Vice President Shettima also announced that President Tinubu had instructed the Ministers of State for Environment and Agriculture to relocate to Niger. Their relocation is aimed at ensuring immediate intervention through the ACRSAL project to tackle drainage issues in Mokwa Town. Additionally, Tinubu has approved the distribution of 20 trucks of food items to the genuine victims, in partnership with the Village Head of Mokwa.



Shettima praised the efforts of the Deputy Governor and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their effective management of the situation.



Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba expressed the state’s dire need for swift intervention to mitigate the disaster’s effects. He highlighted the collapse of four bridges, which has severely disrupted social and economic activities, especially in Rabba, where students face challenges commuting to Mokwa during rainfall.



Garba stated that over 2,000 homes were destroyed, with victims currently seeking refuge with others. He suggested that available land in the state could be utilized to construct new homes for the affected individuals.



Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe, urged the Federal Government to expedite several road projects in Mokwa and across the state. He pointed out that work on a road project bypassing Mokwa Town had halted due to compensation issues and called for its swift completion to alleviate hardships for the residents.



Abubakar also requested the completion of the Mokwa-Brini-Gwari Kaduna Road, Lambata-Bida Road, Bida-Patigi Road, and Agaie-Match Boro Roads. He called for the deployment of an ecological team to address environmental concerns in the town and expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for sending the Vice President to extend sympathies to the flood victims.



Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, Village Head of Mokwa, echoed the community’s appreciation for the Federal Government’s support following the flood disaster.
