Touray Calls for Rigorous Assessment by ECOWAS Media Excellence Award Jury


Abuja: ECOWAS President, Dr. Omar Touray, has emphasized the importance of a meticulous evaluation process to the members of the jury responsible for assessing entries for the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Media Excellence Award. He made this statement during the opening ceremony of the ECOWAS Media Excellence Awards 2025 Jury Deliberation Meeting in Abuja.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event marked the inaugural edition of the awards, themed ’50 Years of ECOWAS – Honouring the Voices That Tell Our Story.’ Touray underscored that the jury members’ inclusion was a testament to their commitment and expertise in upholding journalism standards in the subregion. Represented by Mr. Mambureh Njie, his Special Advisor on Economic Affairs, Touray highlighted that the awards are not merely accolades but part of a legacy for the next 50 years in West Africa.



Touray urged the jury to maintain high evaluation standards based on objectivity, impartiality, and merit. He encouraged them to assess each entry with fairness and a regional perspective, honoring journalism that aligns with ECOWAS’ shared values. Touray also acknowledged the media’s role as a partner in ECOWAS’ journey toward democracy, governance, peace, and regional integration over the past 50 years.



The ECOWAS Media Excellence Award, according to Touray, represents a reaffirmation of fostering a responsible media landscape that promotes regional integration and democratic governance. It celebrates journalists who report with integrity, accuracy, and courage.



Mr. Abdoulie Gassama, the chairman of the jury, expressed his commitment to approach the task with diligence, impartiality, and respect for the work. He highlighted the significance of recognizing journalists who demonstrate exceptional skill and creativity. Gassama emphasized that their submissions exemplify media’s power to inform, inspire, and challenge.



Gassama stated that impact, integrity, innovation, accuracy, fairness, ethics, and craftsmanship would guide the jury’s assessment of the entries. Mr. Joel Ahofodji, ECOWAS spokesman, explained that the jury is responsible for reviewing and selecting the best submissions across categories, ensuring a fair and transparent process.



The jury, chaired by Gassama from Gambia, includes members from various countries: Paul Douakoutche from Benin, Ms. Filomena Silva from Cape Verde, Mr. Bamba Mafoumgbe from Ivory Coast, Dr. Ibrahim Awal from Ghana, Mrs. Yemi Kolapo from Nigeria, and Dr. Adrienne Diop from Senegal.
