TVET Identified as Key Driver for Economic Growth by CS Miano

Nairobi: Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has emphasized the pivotal role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a catalyst for growth across various sectors in the country. Miano highlighted the importance of TVET training as a significant contributor to the economy, urging the youth to leverage the training opportunities available at these institutions to enhance their skills and expertise across all economic sectors.

According to Kenya News Agency, Miano commended the government’s initiatives to revitalize TVET institutions, which equip youth with hands-on training. This preparation is aimed at fostering self-employment and meeting the demands of the job market. Speaking at the 2nd Nyandarua National Polytechnic graduation ceremony, Miano pointed out that the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife benefits significantly from TVET-trained individuals, particularly in hospitality and tourism sectors.

Principal Secretary of the State Department for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria, also addressed the graduates, emphasizing that Kenya’s future hinges on a skilled, innovative, and resilient youth. She affirmed that TVET institutions are central to developing the human capital necessary for the country’s transformation. Dr. Muoria stressed that in today’s world, competence, creativity, and adaptability are more valuable than certificates alone. She encouraged graduates to become not just knowledge recipients but also solution providers and job creators through the skills they’ve acquired.

Dr. Muoria noted that the State Department for TVET is committed to ensuring that classroom and workshop learning translates into real-world opportunities. The Department is enhancing industry linkages through apprenticeships and dual training models. Additionally, she mentioned ongoing collaborations with the private sector in curriculum co-designs and the expansion of industrial attachment opportunities.

The Principal Secretary further highlighted efforts to modernize workshops and laboratories to keep pace with emerging technologies and capacity building for instructors to align with current industry practices. She also mentioned the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Programme, which allows skilled workers in the informal sector to have their competencies formally certified.
