40-year old man’s body retrieved from dam outside Okahandja

The body of a 40-year-old man was on Wednesday retrieved from the Swakoppoort Dam outside Okahandja by divers from the Namibian Police Force (NamPol).

NamPol head of community affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, in an interview with Nampa on Thursday said the body has been identified by close relatives as that of the 40-year-old Erwin Makenzie Tjikune.

Mbeha said the police on Wednesday opened an Inquest docket 11/2023 in connection with the matter.

It is alleged that Tjikune on Monday afternoon travelled to the dam situated about 35 kilometres east of Okahandja in company of two friends – a female and young male.

The trio was allegedly seen socialising at the dam while Tjikune was drinking ‘Ombike’, which is homemade traditional alcohol, said Mbeha.

‘The deceased was allegedly heard complaining of feeling hot and he consequently undressed and jumped into the dam, where he never came out,” said Mbeha.

The woman who was with him allegedly also jumped into the same dam to find him but was unsuccesful, which prompted them to inform the police, Mbeha said.

Police investigations in the matter continue.
