Anambra Government Advocates for Ban on Industrial Oxygen in Hospitals

Awka: Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra Commissioner for Information, has called for legislation to prohibit the use of industrial oxygen in hospitals nationwide, citing health risks associated with its use.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mefor emphasized during a courtesy visit to Ms. Nwamaka Arinze, Managing Director and CEO of the Anambra State Oxygen Production Plant, that industrial oxygen poses significant health dangers when used in medical settings. He advocated for legal measures to be implemented, including penalties for those who continue utilizing industrial oxygen instead of medical-grade oxygen.

Mefor stressed the importance of earning income ethically, highlighting the moral implications of risking human lives for financial gain. He noted that the prevalent use of industrial oxygen necessitates legislative action, backed by strict penalties, to deter such practices.

Referencing the actions of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in shutting down the Bridgehead Drug Market due to the sale of counterfeit and prohibited drugs, Mefor pointed out that some traders prioritize profits over human safety. He argued that legislation and stringent enforcement are crucial to addressing this issue, though he acknowledged enforcement challenges in Anambra State.

The commissioner assured that the Ministry of Information would collaborate with relevant offices to raise awareness about the dangers of using industrial oxygen in hospitals.

Meanwhile, Ms. Arinze of the Anambra State Oxygen Production Plant supported the initiative against industrial oxygen. She reiterated Governor Charles Soludo’s commitment to making medical-grade oxygen accessible and affordable for all residents and criticized the ongoing use of industrial oxygen in healthcare.

Arinze expressed concern over the lack of awareness among some medical professionals regarding the risks of industrial oxygen, emphasizing the importance of life-saving practices and ethical responsibilities in healthcare.
