ECOWAS Court President, Others Commend Retiring Colleagues for Noteworthy Careers


Abuja: Justice Ricardo Gon§alves, President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, along with other officials, has praised the court’s staff who are set to retire this year, acknowledging their significant contributions and the lasting legacies they leave behind. The commendations were made during a ceremony organized by the court to honor four departing employees who have dedicated many years to the institution.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the retiring staff members include Dr. Athanase Atannon, Deputy Chief Registrar; Dr. William Towah, Director of Administration and Finance; Mr. F©licien Hounkanrin, acting Head of the Court’s Communication Services; and Mr. Iliyas Jonah, an Office Aide attached to a judge’s office. Justice Gon§alves emphasized the profound impact these individuals have had on the institution and their colleagues, highlighting the challenge of replacing such esteemed staff.



Justice Gon§alves remarked, “Each of you leaves an indelible mark on this institution, both through your professional results and, above all, through the way you have left an impact on the people around you. Your wisdom and patience will continue to guide and inspire your colleagues. Your example and spirit of dedication will surely be a source of inspiration for many of us.”



Gon§alves further acknowledged the challenging times faced by ECOWAS, noting the simultaneous departure of three member countries and the broader financial, social, and security issues confronting the organization. He expressed optimism that political leaders would seize the opportunity for reflection and future planning, while also emphasizing the court’s commitment to excellence in its forthcoming recruitment efforts.



Dr. Yaouza Ouro-Sama, Chief Registrar of the court, lauded the retirees for their dedication and hard work, urging colleagues to reflect on the significant contributions made by the outgoing employees. He expressed confidence that the retirees’ new chapter would bring exciting opportunities and well-deserved rest.



Mr. Ghislain Agbozo, a staff representative, conveyed gratitude and joy in marking the conclusion of their colleagues’ careers, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the retirees’ achievements and contributions.



Mr. F©licien Hounkanrin, one of the retirees, expressed satisfaction in retiring after two decades of impactful service, reflecting on the court’s evolution and achievements. He advised remaining staff to continue contributing to the court’s success and expressed hope for the return of the three countries that withdrew from ECOWAS.



The event was attended by notable figures, including the court’s Vice-President, Justice Sengu Koroma, Justice Gberi-Be Ouattara, and Justice Dupe Atoki, among others.
